La gestion d'actifs désigne l'ensemble des activités qui consistent à investir des fonds pour le compte de clients dans des portefeuilles contenant différents types d'actifs (par exemple, financiers, immobiliers, fonciers, artistiques) dans le but d'optimiser le rendement tout en limitant le risque. Les produits typiques offerts par les sociétés de conseil en gestion d'actifs sont l'épargne, l'assurance-vie et les produits de placement (portefeuilles d'actions, d'obligations, de devises et de matières premières).
Dans ce contexte, la gestion d'actifs s'articule autour de 3 activités principales :
- La création d'un bilan : situations professionnelles, économiques et familières ;
- La mise en place d'un projet d'investissement : aversion au risque, objectifs en termes de rendement, etc.. ;
- La gestion et l'investissement du capital : selon des critères prédéfinis de rentabilité, de risque, de transmission, de flux financiers, etc...
La gestion d'actifs est souvent aux mains de grands groupes bancaires, principalement des banques de détail (Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America etc.) ou des banques d'investissement (JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, etc.), ou des groupes d'assurance. Les sociétés américaines de gestion d'actifs sont des géants internationaux qui gèrent une part importante des actifs mondiaux. Les projections extrêmement positives concernant la croissance et le développement du marché mondiale de la gestion d'actifs ont une influence significative sur le marché américain, bien que les changements politiques et fiscaux imminents aux Etats-Unis entraînent laissent planer quelques incertitudes.
