La storia della penna risale al 1865. Come indicato da Gralon era in origine uno strumento utilizzato per marcare la pelle, che ha subito diversi miglioramenti. Il giornalista ungherese José Ladislav Biro migliorato le penne dell'epoca con l'inchiostro ad asciugatura rapida utilizzato per la stampa di giornali. Era una stilografica (la viscosità dell'inchiostro le ha impedito di scorrere). Ebbe quindi l'idea di dotare le penne di una palla, dando vita nel 1938 all'omonima penna. L'invenzione fu brevettata nel 1943 e fu creata l'azienda di penne Biro. Negli Stati Uniti, le prime penne a sfera sono state vendute da Reynolds nell'ottobre 1945 e in Europa, Biro ha trasferito il suo brevetto alla francese Marcel Bich (azienda Bic), che migliora il prodotto: lo dota di una sfera in acciaio inossidabile di 1 mm di diametro che ruota e facilita la scrittura. Qui inizia la produzione in serie, i costi diminuiscono notevolmente e le penne diventano usa e getta. Nel 1952 viene lanciato il famoso modello Bic Cristal, che permette di monitorare il livello dell'inchiostro grazie al tubo di plastica trasparente.
