Il fai-da-te si riferisce alle attività manuali non professionali di riparazione, creazione, miglioramento e manutenzione di piccoli oggetti in casa. Questo studio si concentra sul mercato del bricolage al consumo ed esclude quindi l'attività BtoB dei negozi e dei centri di bricolage.

Il mercato del fai da te riguarda quindi una grande varietà di articoli. L'Union Nationale des Industriels du Bricolage (Inoha) ha identificato 11 categorie principali: edilizia, idraulica/sanitaria, giardino, pittura/colle, legno/lavoro in legno, rivestimenti, utensili, elettricità, ferramenta, decorazione e comfort termico.

Questi diversi prodotti sono prodotti in Francia o importati e poi distribuiti da superstore fai da te, dettaglianti, pure-players digitali o superstore alimentari. In Francia, la distribuzione degli articoli di bricolage è tuttavia molto concentrata poiché i negozi di bricolage rappresentano il 74% delle vendite in valore e solo 4 gruppi rappresentano il 93% del fatturato dei negozi di bricolage, cioè i due terzi del mercato totale. I principali attori del settore sono i 4 gruppi Adeo (Leroy Merlin, Weldom, Bricoman), Kingfisher (Castorama, Bricodépot), Mousquetaires (Bricomarché, Bricocash, Bricorama) e Mr Bricolage (Mr Bricolage, Briconautes).

Il mercato francese del fai da te è il terzo più grande d'Europa, dietro laGermania e il Regno Unito. Su scala globale, tuttavia, gli Stati Uniti dominano ampiamente, rappresentando circa la metà del mercato mondiale in valore. Questo mercato globale ammontava a 594 miliardi di euro nel 2018, in costante crescita dal 2013.

Il mercato francese del fai da te ha visto un aumento del 3,4% del fatturato nel 2019. Questa crescita si spiega in particolare con la ripresa economica del settore delle costruzioni e l'aumento della tendenza al "fai da te".

Nei mesi di marzo e aprile 2020, la crisi del Covid-19 aveva interrotto lo slancio del mercato francese del bricolage, che nel febbraio 2020 registrava un +2,21% su base annua in termini di valore. Dopo il contenimento, tuttavia, si è verificato un effetto di recupero con un tasso di crescita del 30% delle vendite di fai da te nel giugno 2020 rispetto al giugno 2019 e poi il ritmo di crescita delle vendite è rallentato, illustrando il graduale ritorno alla normalità delle vendite di fai da te.
