Il futsal è uno sport derivato dal calcio che si gioca tradizionalmente su un piccolo campo indoor, e coinvolge due squadre di cinque giocatori. Sebbene ci possa essere una differenza tra disciplina e attività di futsal, il futsal, sotto questo nome, si riferisce ai complessi calcistici indoor - a pagamento.
Il Futsal è stato creato in Uruguay nei primi anni '30 dopo i Mondiali del 1930, ed è un fenomeno recente in Europa. Il futsal è inizialmente chiamato foot-bola-sala o futebol de salão, letteralmente salon football e deriva dalla contrazione tra la parola spagnola o portoghese per "football" e la francese o spagnola per "interior". La sua introduzione nel continente europeo è stata tardiva, in Italia il futsal si ritiene arrivi introno agli anni ’80.
Il calcio a 5 in Italia ha vissuto una crescita esponenziale tra il 2008 e il 2016, arrivando quasi a raddoppiare il numero di tesserati. Un’evoluzione che sembra continuare positivamente a scapito del calcio, ma il futsal dovrà affrontare cambiamenti organizzativi (e.g. strutture impiantistiche delle società), difficoltà di visibilità e alcuni scetticismi riguardo l’essenza stessa dello sport.
