Nati in Giappone durante l'era Meiji, modernizzante e nazionalista, i primi manga furono ispirati dai fumetti europei e pubblicati sui giornali. Influenzati dai fumetti americani del dopoguerra, i mangaka iniziarono a disegnare i loro manga nella forma che conosciamo oggi.
