El bricolaje se refiere a las actividades manuales no profesionales de reparación, creación, mejora y mantenimiento de pequeños objetos en el hogar. Este estudio se centra en el mercado de consumo de bricolaje y, por lo tanto, excluye la actividad B2B de las tiendas y centros de bricolaje.

Por tanto, el mercado del bricolaje abarca una gran variedad de artículos. La Unión Nacional de Industriales del Bricolaje (Inoha) ha identificado 11 categorías principales: construcción, fontanería/sanitarios, jardín, pintura/pegamentos, madera/madera, revestimientos, herramientas, electricidad, ferretería, decoración y confort térmico.

Estos diversos productos se producen en Francia o se importan y luego los distribuyen los grandes almacenes de bricolaje, los minoristas, los operadores digitales puros o los supermercados de alimentación. El mercado francés del bricolaje es el tercero de Europa, por detrás deAlemania y el Reino Unido. Sin embargo, a escala global, Estados Unidos domina ampliamente, representando aproximadamente la mitad del mercado mundial en valor. Este mercado mundial ascendió a 594.000 millones de euros en 2018, con un crecimiento constante desde 2013.

El mercado francés del bricolaje registró un aumento del 3,4% en su facturación en 2019. Este crecimiento se explica, en particular, por la recuperación económica del sector de la construcción y el aumento de la tendencia al "hágalo usted mismo".

En marzo y abril de 2020, la crisis de Covid-19 había interrumpido el impulso del mercado francés del bricolaje, que en febrero de 2020 era de un 2,21% interanual en valor. Sin embargo, tras la contención, se produjo un efecto de recuperación con una tasa de crecimiento del 30% en las ventas de bricolaje en junio de 2020 en comparación con junio de 2019 y, a continuación, el ritmo de crecimiento de las ventas se redujo, lo que ilustra la vuelta gradual a la normalidad en las ventas de bricolaje.
