El mercado de los clubes de fútbol abarca principalmente a los jugadores de la Ligue de football professionnel (LFP), que agrupa a los clubes franceses y monegascos con estatus profesional, es decir, los 20 clubes de la Ligue 1, y los 20 clubes de la Ligue 2.

El sector económico del "fútbol profesional" en Francia genera varios miles de millones de euros cada año con un crecimiento anual de dos dígitos desde 2016, tras muchos años de déficit. Pero el PSG lleva dos tercios del crecimiento de sus compañeros. En 2016, casi el 3% de la población francesa pertenecía a un club de fútbol y Francia es uno de los principales países futbolísticos de Europa, con más de 15.000 clubes de fútbol, y más de 2 millones de socios, de los cuales el 5% son mujeres (una cifra que no deja de aumentar).

Los traspasos, tanto en verano como en invierno, contribuyen al crecimiento del fútbol en Francia con cantidades de dinero cada vez mayores, ya sea en el país o en el extranjero.(Neymar, comprado por 220 millones de euros por el PSG) o en venta (Pepe, vendido por más de 80 millones de euros por el Lille en 2019). Por ejemplo, en 2016, los traspasos durante el periodo estival ascendieron a más de 4.200 millones de euros, impulsados por el gasto de 1.400 millones de euros de la Premier League británica. La Ligue 1 francesa generó un beneficio de 425 millones de euros en traspasos. Además, el patrocinio y los derechos de televisión, cada vez más importantes, contribuyen al crecimiento del mercado en Francia.

El mercado de los clubes de fútbol está dominado por el PSG, el Olympique Lyonnais y el Mónaco, además de un puñado de otros clubes, lo que deja poco espacio para el resto de los jugadores. El enorme crecimiento del PSG y del OL puede ocultar las dificultades financieras de los demás clubes, lo que hace bastante difícil estimar el crecimiento de los demás actores del mercado en los próximos años.

El mercado de los clubes de fútbol se enfrenta a crecientes restricciones normativas (propuesta de impuesto sobre la renta elevado), así como a la financiarización de la economía del fútbol, marcada por la llegada de fondos de inversión extranjeros.
