1.1 Definición y alcance del estudio

El mercado de la cosmética ecológica representa un sub-segmento del mercado cosmético en general. Cualquier sustancia utilizada para limpiar, hidratar o modificar la piel, el cabello, las uñas o los dientes de una persona, se considera un producto cosmético.

Se pueden distinguir dos categorías de cosméticos

  • Productos de belleza: por ejemplo, maquillaje, perfume, crema para la piel
  • Productos para el cuidado de la piel: por ejemplo, champú, jabón, desodorante

Los productos cosméticos y de cuidado de la piel ecológicos no contienen sustancias químicas como parabenos, ftalatos, sales de aluminio y productos petroquímicos, que son potencialmente perjudiciales para la salud. Sin embargo, en el Reino Unido existe un tratamiento legal que distingue entre los términos "orgánico", "natural" o "bio", aunque existen normas principalmente convencionales, como veremos más adelante
