With a projected CAGR of 4% for the forecast period 2016-2024, the market is expected to expand in terms of overall value from USD 169.9 billion in 2016 to USD 307.2 billion by 2024. The US bottled water consumption was about 12.8 billion gallons in 2016.

A majority of bottled water sold in the US is sourced domestically. Most companies are small and community-based, using local water sources, and distributing their products within an average radius of 300 miles from their bottling plants.

An increase in the number of health-conscious consumers and elevated hygiene standards are the key factors driving the demand for bottled water. Consumers now prefer healthy and refreshing beverages with a minimum calorie count and no caffeine, additives or preservatives.

In 2016, bottled water sales in the US toppled carbonated drinks for the first time. However, companies are facing a backlash from environmentalists for their processes, as a lot of energy is needed for H2O extraction, processing and packaging. With a rise in awareness of global warming and climate change, companies are being criticized for improper disposal of used bottles,  hindering the growth and prosperity of the market. This has opened up opportunities for various players to develop recyclable and eco-friendly packaging materials. Consumers can now choose from products that ensure all primary qualities of of conventional plain water are maintained with minimum impact on the environment.
