In the field of packaging, the seal is the pad which covers and protects the product. It is a thin film, most often made of plastic or aluminium. The seal is fixed on the container either manually or by welding for sensitive products (a.k.a thermosealing).
Seals are tend to be used by the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Manufacturers tend to be small and medium-sized companies specialising in seals or large manufacturers of flexible packaging whose main activity is not the seal production. Stakeholders focus on innovation in order to offer easier to use caps for consumers.
The sector, which has been negatively affected by the global crisis, has been undergoing restructuring in recent months. Many struggling SMEs had to merge with large groups in order to avoid bankruptcy. Among these groups are Embatherm, Bemis, Plastienvase, Packinov and Enercon. Several mergers and acquisitions have taken place, including the acquisition of TR Alucap by Wendel, Europe's leading player in this market.
