The Market for Industrial Cleaning | France

The French industrial cleaning market evolved during the 1990s following the explosion of outsourcing of cleaning services. The activity's turnover has doubled in 6 years, to represent more than 11 billion euros. Similarly, the number of firms rose over this period from 10,600 to 17,000 (including a large number of VSEs) while the number of employees jumped from 26,000 to 43,000 people (1). 

Now saturated, the industrial cleaning sector has entered a phase of concentration. The still low outsourcing rate of French companies (around 52%) suggests interesting prospects for the sector 

This evolution has led to a transformation of the structure of the players. The latter are resolutely turning towards diversification and internationalisation of their offer and are positioning themselves as multiservice providers. Even if the cleaning activity generally remains their major vocation, the companies develop thanks to the services of guarding and security, the maintenance of the green spaces and public spaces (urban cleaning, maintenance of public transport...), industrial maintenance, the services to the person, the services of human resources or the treatment of waste. 

The search for niche markets with high added value is essential for companies that have adapted to the Facility Management era. These include Samsix Propreté, GSF (Groupe Service France), ISS Propreté, Challancin Propreté and Atalian.  

These new giant multiservice operators (more than 500 employees) represent only 1% of French industrial cleaning companies but generate 57% of the turnover of this fragmented market (2). The business is highly competitive and customers are increasingly demanding. The price of services is falling and margins shrink if productivity is not optimal. 

The new challenge for players in the cleaning and related services sector is now to meet the social and environmental requirements implied by the nature of their activities in terms of social responsibility. This involves certification, the use of less polluting solvents and staff training to make better use of the products.
