The market for online devices is booming, with 8.4 billion online devices worldwide in 2017 with sales growth of more than 25% in one year, a figure that will rise to 20 billion by 2020, according to a Gartner study. China, the United States and Europe accounted for 67% of this market in 2017. According to the Gartner study, the turnover generated in this market was 1689 billion dollars in 2017 and this amount could reach 3000 billion dollars in 2020. In France, the household appliance market recorded a total turnover of more than 8.1 billion euros in 2016, including 4.9 billion euros for large household appliances and 3.2 billion for small electrical appliances. In this market, the connected household appliance segment has finally taken off since 2015. It already represented 11.5 billion euros in 2013, with more than 30 million household appliances connected. In France, the connected sector grew by 132% for large household appliances and 88% for small appliances in 2016. The development of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections would enable you to control your home equipment by fine-tuning the setting of a heating or air conditioning system or by starting the preheating of your oven or washing machine, for example. The development of connected devices also allows new applications in the field of security: it will be possible to monitor the inside of your home with all kinds of devices, or even to walk virtually at home. Companies such as the French Beewi are also developing smoke or humidity detectors.

Many companies are seeking to position themselves on the market. Samsung, LG and Panasonic are looking to offer new functionalities. Traditional household appliance manufacturers such as Whirlpool, Electrolux or FagorBrandt are also present on the market. They are developing their product range by focusing on optimising energy consumption. Finally, telecom operators are looking to make the Internet box the access point to the whole house. All stakeholders are focusing on quality by making progress in terms of comfort, ease of use and lower resource consumption.
