The Bottled Water Market | United States

With an increasing demand for clean, pollution-free water, the bottled water market in the US is experiencing gradual growth. The bottled water market was valued at USD 88.5 billion in 2015 and is forecasted to go up to USD 138.1 billion from 2017-2020. The US is the second largest consumer of bottled water in the world, with the highest global and regional demand at 52%.

Bottled water is classified into three categories on the basis of packaging – bottles (PET), cans and cartons. The major channels of distribution for bottled water are hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores, departmental stores and specialty stores. Furthermore, the water is segmented into carbonated, flavored and functional water.

In terms of consumption by volume, bottled water grew from 11.8 billion gallons in 2015 to 12.8 billion gallons, thus indicating an increase of 9%. With changes in lifestyle, needs and health concerns, a number of Americans are opting for bottled water as opposed to other packaged beverages.

Bottled water companies are constantly under scrutiny for their manufacturing and packing processes. A large volume of water is wasted in processing, extracting and packaging the water. Most bottled water companies use plastic bottles to package the water, which are difficult to dispose off after use, thus raising concerns amongst environmentalists. Therefore top brands are looking at eco-friendly options to package water.

A great amount of emphasis is being placed on bottled water with health benefits. Thus brands are trying to maintain the minerals and naturalness of the water to ensure they appeal to the consumers preference.
