The shelving market in France amounted to €450 million in 2016. This highly competitive market has seen its margin halved since 2008 and is nearing the end of a merger cycle that has led to the emergence of leaders: Mecalux, Provost, Duwic, Averis and a few others. Provost is the undisputed leader in the French market with approximately 14 manufacturers in the sector.
The shelving market mainly includes the following products: pallet racks, archive and office shelving, mobile shelving, cantilever racks, metal shelving, mesh partitions and other types of display shelving or special storage.
Companies on the market are increasingly looking beyond shelving to provide consulting solutions in the choice of materials and the organisation of storage spaces. The profession of shelving companies has thus evolved. The companies have gone from selling metal shelving, mobile or pallet racking and display shelving to being experts in the creation and management of shelves.
The drive, which has been one of the sources of development for shelving companies in recent years, is losing momentum and the sector is now looking for new vectors for growth.
R&D and dynamic shelving are also key growth areas for the sector.
Online trading is also a growth opportunity for shelving companies. Online retailers manage many products as well as small quantities. These characteristics imply different shelving solutions than those used in industry, logistics or distribution.
Finally, the development of XXL logistics platforms allows shelving companies to contribute their expertise in the organization and management of stocks.
In a difficult environment with virtually zero growth prospects for 2015, companies remain cautious about their future.
