Offshore Wind Turbine Market | France

Offshore wind turbines are installed at sea and convert wind power into electricity. The offshore wind energy market encompasses the manufacture, installation and operation of offshore wind farms.

In 2016, the size of the global wind farm was estimated at 435 GW, supplying 7% of the world's electricity needs. On the European market, the cumulative investment of the wind energy sector by 2020 would be around 200 billion euros. In 2016, investments reached a record level of 5.78 billion euros and it is estimated that investments will reach 18 billion euros in the coming years. In 2009, the French Environment Round Table (Grenelle de L'environnement) set a target of 25,000 MW for wind power in 2020 (including 6,000 MW for offshore), three times more than in 2013.

Offshore wind energy has experienced strong growth in Europe since 2015, due to substantial investments of 30 billion euros, representing a +40% growth from 2015 to 2016, of which 25.8 billion euros has been invested in Europe. Europe produces 59.8% of the additional offshore electricity capacity in the world, or 47 660 MW. The United Kingdom is the world's leading producer of offshore wind energy in 2016. With its 3,500 km of coastline in metropolitan France and its overseas territories, France is at the head of the world's second largest maritime space. China is expected to take the lead over the 2017-2026 period. At the end of the period, the United Kingdom will ultimately remain the leader in cumulative production capacity with 16,052 MW.

The development of offshore wind energy requires specialist expertise and skills. Although it only represents 5% of the market today, offshore wind energy is a growth driver, but this entails new technological challenges for component suppliers.

The offshore wind energy market is dominated by a few energy companies and manufacturers, leaving little room for new entrants.

In order to compete with thermal or nuclear electricity, market players are committed to reducing costs, particularly through increased turbine power and reduced construction times.

The offshore wind energy market in France, which has long been supported by public subsidies, will have to be restructured in order to win government contracts for offshore wind farms along the French coast.
