The Mergers and Acquisitions Market | France

Mergers and acquisitions are actions carried out by companies to take financial and/or operational control or simply to align themselves to create synergies with another company. The acronym M&A (mergers & acquisitions) is often used.

The M&A market had slowed down following the economic and financial crisis of 2008 due to a lack of liquidity, but 2013 and 2014 saw a upturn in this sector. In 2013, the turnover was close to 100 billion euros and growth is still expected for 2014 and the coming months. While growth continued until 2016, the global M&A market declined by 17% to $3.630 trillion at the end of 2016. This turnaround after record figures in 2015 is explained by a turbulent geopolitical context: American elections, Brexit and the return of political interventions on the M&A scene, which has slowed transactions. Against this backdrop of gloom, Europe and particularly France stand out from the crowd. The European M&A market is worth $440.5 billion with growth of +29% in the first half of 2017, largely due to the dynamism of France. France reported more than $90 billion in transactions over this period.

The main participants in a M&A are the companies involved in the transaction and the banks that advise and finance the transaction. In the French M&A market, American banks dominate. French banks are above the average globally but are now in decline. The leaders are the world's largest banks.

International growth with the creation of specialized business entities is the main strategy of the M&A market players.

The global economic context is a major factor in the success of the M&A market. In addition, mergers and acquisitions are partially regulated to maintain a satisfactory level of competition. One possible outcome is the blocking of certain transactions that on paper would have made a lot of money for the banks involved. As in all financial matters, the stakeholders are subject to very strict transparency rules.
