Insurance Broker Market | France

French insurance brokerage has the characteristic of being diversified by the size of its participants. The profession has around 3,500 small or medium-sized firms, controlled by family capital or natural persons, which coexist alongside very large groups.

There are three categories of brokers:

- General brokers

- wholesale brokers, who design their offers themselves, place them with insurers who delegate their management and administration and market them.

- specialist brokers, who focus on a single product line (property or life) or customer segment (banking, local authorities, etc.) or on a single risk management branch.

In 2015, the sector had 29,971 companies with a turnover of 90,141 billion euros. Brokers were able to withstand the crisis and increased competition, recording growth of 1.5% in 2015 and 1.8% in 2016 according to Xerfi.

Although more than half of the business concerns property and casualty insurance (fire, accident, miscellaneous risks, transport), the structure of the business portfolio can vary greatly from one broker to another depending on size and positioning (generalist, wholesaler or specialist).

In a difficult economic context where cost reduction is the main obsession, each category of insurance broker must succeed in "innovating" to adapt to the new demands of their clients. Competition in the sector is increasing for several reasons:

-Arrival of new players: large retailers, specifiers (dealers, real estate professionals,...), bank insurers, web players

- Widespread comparison of services on the Internet (lesfurets.com, lelynx.fr,)

- Online brokers (Santiane or AssurOne Group)

These trends force companies in the sector to innovate, renew and offer products and services with high added value.  The objectives will therefore be to "grow", diversify, innovate to win new markets and develop in niche markets such as unpaid rents, product theft, breakdowns, travel, etc. Although digital technology offers considerable advantages and advances, it threatens the brokerage profession, with the multiplication of online services and the automation of certain broker tasks. The profession is therefore bound to evolve.

Gras Savoye, April Groupe, Verspieren, Aon France and Siaci Saint Honoré are among the leaders in the French market.
