The Frozen Yogurt Market | France

After having been very successful in the United States and Asia, frozen yoghurt appeared in France in the 2000s. Made from yoghurt, organic milk, sugar and flavourings, frozen yogurt has a low-fat content (0% to 2%) and is therefore an alternative to traditional ice creams.

According to Mintel, total sales in the frozen yogurt market were 75 billion US dollars in 2011. The world leader is the United States with over 2500 stores and their number is constantly growing. The main European market driver is the English Frozen Yogurt market represented 9.5 million dollars in 2011. In the same year, the turnover on the French market was 2.5 billion euros, or an average annual consumption of 170 pots per person. The expected success in France has not yet occurred, despite the fact that, over the last five years, around fifteen brands have appeared on the French market.

The first company to be established in Paris, My Berry, now multiplies its brands and has been merged by the It Mylk brand, based in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. New players are also appearing in France. This is especially the case for the British brand Yoomoo, which arrived in France in March 2013 and stands out from its competitors by offering three flavours served in colourful pots. Danone has opened a frozen yoghurt outlet in Seine-Saint-Denis, in the Paris region. While some brands focus on the dietary aspect, others, such as It Mylk or Chacun ses Goûts, emphasize the "homemade" and "natural" side of their products, designed using traditional recipes and natural ingredients. The producers also offer consumers the opportunity to create their own compositions.

Market leaders have seen their business grow considerably in just a few years. Between 2010 and 2011, It Mylk saw its turnover increase by 30% and opened seven outlets. Other companies have entered the French market since then, such as the American Tutti Frutti Frozen yogurt, as well as French companies Yogurt Factory, Enjöy and Boon.
