The fitness market includes all sports centre practices related to the well-being of the body. This is a very new market that has developed under the influence of television gym classes and the importance of sport in the daily lives of French people.
The European fitness industry represents about 25 billion euros and has more than 48,000 clubs and 44 million subscribers. In France, the size of the fitness market is estimated at 2.5 billion euros (source: fitness trend) generated by approximately 4,000 to 4,500 clubs (source: Fitness-challenges).
The fitness market in France is highly fragmented (97% of companies employ less than 50 employees), poorly structured and poorly regulated. Nevertheless, there is a certain standardization in the content with many clubs having opted for the Mills method, for example.
While many clubs specialize in one segment (e.g. Curves which is a women’s only gym) some choose to diversify to attract a wider clientele. The differences are mainly shown in the price offered, the location of the sports rooms and the equipment available to members.
Despite steady market growth in recent years, France is lagging and has a penetration rate of 6.4%, just above the European average of 6%. Compared to neighbouring countries and based on historical growth rates, its growth potential is estimated at 5% per year. These growth prospects should be reinforced by the increasing power of networks with better monitoring of their members and more automated business processes.
