The electricity market is organised around four main areas: production, transmission, distribution and marketing of this energy.
Previously highly contolled, the European electricity supply market has been fully open to competition since 1 July 2007. According to RTE, French electricity production reached 540.6 TWh in 2014, down 1.8% compared to 2013.
Once solely dominated by EDF, the French electricity market is now open to competition and is characterised by an increase in both the number of players and the intensity of competition.
Electricity market players are now engaged in a diversification strategy, particularly towards gas, in order to take advantage of synergies and increase their market share.
The market is expected to undergo new developments, influenced by European regulation, international competition and the energy transition.
