The Health-Conscious Foods Market | France

Health-conscious foods make up one of the four market segments of homogenized foods and dietetics. In recent years, this market composed of thirty-five companies has achieved an estimated turnover of just under 2 billion euros per year (1).  

Although health-conscious foods have experienced strong growth over the last 10 years, this trend seems to have been reversed: sales fell in 2015 with a drop of -11.5% in sales in mass distribution and an expected fall of 3% per year by 2018. This is because of the lack of consumer confidence in these products, they doubt their effectiveness and now prefer homemade products. Nevertheless, Xerfi forecasts a 5 to 10% growth in the health-conscious foods market by 2018. The organic market already represented 4.5 billion euros of sales in 2015 and should still experience an average annual growth of 9% by 2018, 10 to 20% for products in gluten. This dynamism is explained by the growing concern of Westerners for their well-being and their health, and therefore healthy food.   

Although the market has reached maturity, many niches such as food products for allergic populations remain to be explored. This concentrated sector is dominated by a few major players. The latter have a competitive advantage in terms of research, innovation and marketing. In recent years, however, there has been a growing presence of private labels on the market. The main companies in the market are Nutrition & Santé, Nutribio, Nestlé Nutrition, Léa Nature and Vitagermine. Gerblé is in decline (Xerfi).  

The health-conscious foods market today therefore has competitors from natural, homemade, organic and gluten-free products. Nevertheless, if dietary brands innovate and communicate appropriately about their products and benefits, this may help to regain ground.
