The Credit Market | United States

The credit market, also popularly known as the bond market, is a financial market where investors usually trade in stocks, shares, bonds, debts and other securities. The credit markets assume a significant role in fueling the growth of almost all the countries. By observing the interest rates and demand from the investor side for the type of bonds, risk free bonds such as government bonds or highly risky such as junk bonds in the credit market, one can gauge the financial health of the community one is trading in. The credit market is broadly divided into five types of markets: corporate bonds, government bonds, municipal bonds, mortgage backed and funding.

At present the US has the highest market share amounted to 44 per cent of the credit market. The subprime mortgage crisis in the US in 2008 has impacted the liquidity in the US credit market causing it to shrink by almost 70%. The global private credit market has seen a rise from $440 billion 2015, to $560 billion in 2016. Institutional capital is giving a boost to lending in Europe while much of this growth has been triggered by demand from European businesses. However, the US still remains the largest private credit market, both in the case of overall assets under management, and new assets raised in 2015. With Basel III norms designed to meet the anomalies of the market and boost liquidity, and further reduce leverage in consumer banking systems, the global credit market is seen to be bracing slowly. One major element to impact the future of consumer credit market is considered to be portfolio risk solutions. While another crucial factor driving the consumer credit market is emergence of micro-enterprises in the emerging economies. This is prevalent in case of China, India, Thailand and Nigeria. A few credit companies have started the trend of collaborating with alternative lenders, in order to enhance their global presence and improve their market shares. Analysts predict in 2017 the access to global credit markets will depend more on global political events.
